Heritage Open Days 19th & 20th September
The Old Saxon Church will open their doors for Heritage Open Days on 19th -20th September from 10 am – 5 pm
St Martha’s on the Hill will be open and welcoming visitors from 1.30 pm to 5 pm and hosting an illustrated talk from 2 pm to 3 pm on St Martha’s through the ages given by Simon Harrold a former Verger at the Church. Following this, Simon and other stewards will be on hand to assist visitors.
A Children’s Trail will entertain younger guests. Refreshments and cake will be available to be enjoyed outside the Church with Donations to the Chilworth Parish.
Albury Pigeon House will be open from 11:00 am to 5 pm. Discover inside the unusual octagonal Albury Pigeon house, built in the 16th century when pigeons were used for food, and their droppings for gunpowder.
Enter and see the potence (the rotatable access ladder) and the 649 pigeonholes.
St James’ Church in Shere will be open from 12 pm to 5 pm and providing the access to the Bell Tower. Local tour guides will be on hand to walk you through the building's deep history, including its imposing Norman spire and its ties to the village's historic church "Everyday Histories" theme. You will also have the chance to meet the ‘Being with’ Community outreach team let by Ian Gregory.
