Anzac Day

The Anzac Day service is held to commemorate Lieutenant General Freyberg, VC, GCMG, KCB, KBE, DSO & Three Bars. He is buried in the churchyard.

General Freyberg was born in Surrey and moved to New Zealand at the age of two. He attended Wellington College in New Zealand from 1897 – 1904.

General Freyberg took part in the beach landings during the Gallipoli Campaign and was the youngest general in the British Army during the First World War. He was one of the most highly decorated soldiers of the British Empire in the First World War. During the Second World War, he commanded the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Battle of Crete, the North African Campaign and the Italian Campaign.

He was the 7th Governor-General of New Zealand (1946 – 1952) and a Member of the House of Lords as Baron Freyberg (1951 – 1963).
