Cellos at St Thomas'

On 7th January 2017, a concert of cello and violin music was held at St Thomas'.  Five hugely talented, award-winning students gave a recital that started powerfully but intimately, with the haunting, intricate Suite No 2 by Bach for solo cello and ended with the exuberance of the Scherzo of Schubert's String Quartet.

The choice of pieces was masterly.  Most of them were linked by a searching, questioning theme.  This was particularly evident in the Beethoven Quartet, which in the hands of these musicians became a, thoughtful and energetic conversation between the instruments.

With the winter light glowing through St Thomas' clerestory windows, the fine acoustics and the calm engendered by the beautiful space of this Arts & Crafts building, these musicians gave us a profound experience.

We were deeply privileged to be hosts to their first public concert and hope we will see and hear much more of them in the future.  The Quartet (they are settling on a name - perhaps the Imperial String Quartet?) is: Tudor Trita, Philip Christian, Susanna Ward and Elizabeth Porter.  They were joined by Elizabeth's sister, Catherine Porter, currently studying at Cambridge.

A generous buffet and drinks were laid on, organised by the Social Committee.
