The Third Sunday of Advent

Readings:

Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11

Psalm 126

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

John 1:6-8, 19-28

We pray:

O God of peace,

whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom

and restored the broken to wholeness of life:

look with compassion upon the anguish of the world

and, by thy healing power,

make whole both people and nations;

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Working around a traditional Advent wreath, today we light the third candle

with the theme of ‘John the Baptist’.

A prayer for the Third Sunday of Advent:

God our Father,

you gave to Zechariah and Elizabeth in their old age

a son called John.

He grew up strong in spirit,

prepared the people for the coming of the Lord.

Help us to be ready to welcome Christ into our hearts,

and to grow strong in faith by the power of the Spirit.

We ask this through Jesus Christ,

the Light who is coming into the world.

The Advent Antiphons, sung originally as antiphons to the Magnificat at the Evening Office from 17th to 23rd December are well known through the hymn ‘O Come, O Come, Emmanuel’.

They can be used on the last 7 days of Advent, beginning on 17th December, as calls to God to come as Messiah/Christ to guide and save us and bring us peace,

As Christmas draws closer, the cry becomes increasingly urgent via a rich mosaic of images.

Each ‘O’ is a title for the Messiah and refers to OT prophetic texts

The Great ‘O’s - a Service of Hope and Expectation.

O Emmanuel  ---- Isaiah 7:14

Therefore, the Lord will give you a sign – a young woman is with child and will bear a son and shall call him Emmanuel (God with us).

O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver,

hope of the nations and their saviour:

come and save us, O Lord our God.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Matthew 1:18-23

O Wisdom ---- Isaiah 11:2-3

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest on him

The Spirit of wisdom and understanding

The Spirit of counsel and might

The Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord

O Wisdom, coming forth from the Most High,

filling all creation and reigning to the ends of the earth:

come and teach us the way of truth.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Ecclesiasticus 24:3-9 (Apocrypha)

O Lord of Lords ---- Isaiah 11:4

With righteousness he will judge the poor and decide with equity for the meek of the earth

O Lord of Lords and ruler of the House of Israel,

you appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush,

and gave him the law on Sinai:

come with your outstretched arm and ransom us.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Exodus 3:1-6

O Root of Jesse ---- Isaiah 11:10 and Micah

The root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples. The nations shall enquire of him and his dwelling shall be glorious.

The Messiah will be of the lineage of David and born in David’s city – Bethlehem

O root of Jesse, standing as a sign among the nations;

Kings will keep silence before you for whom the nations long:

Come and save us and delay no longer.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Isaiah 11:1-4

O Key of David --- Isaiah 22:22

God will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David – he shall open and no one shall shut, he shall shut and no one shall open.

O key of David and sceptre of the House of Israel;

You open and none can shut;

You shut and none shall open:

Come and free the captives from prison

And break down the walls of death.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Isaiah 22:21-23

O Dayspring/Morning Star ---- Isaiah 9:2

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

On those who lived in a land of deep darkness, on them the light has shined.

O morning star, splendour of the light eternal and

Bright sun of righteousness:

Come and bring light to those who dwell in darkness

And walk in the shadow of death.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Numbers 24:15b-17

O Desire/King of the nations ---- Isaiah 9:6

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us.

Authority rests upon his shoulders and he is called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

O king of the nations, you alone can fulfil their desires;

Cornerstone, binding all together:

Come and save the creatures you fashioned from the dust of the earth.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Jeremiah 30:7-11a

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

May the Light of Christ shine in your hearts this Advent and Christmas-time.

All seasonal blessings,
